Title: New forum
Post by: Mikkel Paulson on June 03, 2010, 12:04:35 AM
Due to the need to implement a less haphazard approach to forum moderation, and to implement a more advanced system for providing committee members with an opportunity to discuss sensitive policy matters out of public view, we have decided to replace the old Phorum system with a new Simple Machines install. It also supports a complete French interface and translated board titles/descriptions for those so inclined, and has a calendar feature (http://www.pirateparty.ca/forum/index.php?action=calendar) which all members are encouraged to use in scheduling meetings.

I apologize for the inconvenience in the lost posts, but due to several recent transgressions, it was deemed necessary. Hopefully discussion here will be more moderate and enjoyable for all parties. Please note that the proposed rules (http://www.pirateparty.ca/forum/index.php?topic=7.0) have been implemented and will be enforced, albeit only when more reasonable and civilized measures fail. The first duty of moderators will continue to be to moderate debate rather than to delete and lock posts and hand out bans indiscriminately.

Finally, this design is a rush job on my part. Please let you know if you spot anything that looks odd or doesn't function properly.

Oh, and sorry for all of the sticky threads with my name on them. Most of them are copied from the old forums and either not my words or not exclusively my sentiments. I apologize if it gives the impression that I am power-tripping around here as that is not my intention. I was simply the only one with access to the forum for some time, so it fell to me to establish the boards and stickies so as to ensure a smooth transition.

The agreement you have to make to register should be revised. It says you have to follow the law of the United States rather the Canada and doesn't take into account fair dealing when saying posting copyrighted material is prohibited.

Also, I think the old forums should be kept available in read-only mode.

This forum doesn't seem to feature the extensive support for rss feeds that the old one had.

Any chance we can get a better visual cue that there are new posts in a forum? Right now a tiny little strip of color is added. How about making the whole page icon red or something  when theres a new post?

Excellent point. None of us are lawyers, but would you like to draft a new one?

I'll look into it. Can't promise a speedy fix, though, as I've got a lot on my plate. What did it have, RSS feeds for each board and thread?

You should've seen it before; it turned a slightly different shade of orange when there were new posts. Again, I'll look into it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

My eyes probably needs adjustment, its that when the letters were bigger - you can read what is being said simply by glancing at the screen with those larger letters.

But now, it seems you need to focus yourself in front of the screen and fix your eyes on the words to make out what they mean.

Thats my opinion anyway

Couldn't hurt, it does seem a tad small.

FYI>
if you click the chat nav link while viewing the Forum you forgot a /
it calling for www.pirateparty.cachat.
it should be of course www.pirateparty.ca/chat

Also, you may want to see how clicking on the merchandise opens, you loose your base back to the main site.
Also from the get involved tab, Local Meetings it leads to an error",The requested URL /forum/list.php was not found on this server."
Perhaps a trial click thru  to test all links is in order
Just thoughts.
Site looks good though, appreciate the hard work that goes into setting it up.
cheers
As the site gets larger and much less manageable you may want to try "web link validator" or " Linkscan" I have had great luck with both of those, one of which has a trial version.

Yeah it would be worth a try, at least it would be easier on the eyes.

I've been here for exactly a year and I'm already use to the previous font.

How do we get back some of the old postings? There was a lot of material there.

If you search Google you can still find the Google Cached version. You should save anything you want to keep, because I don't know how long it will remain.

Perhaps it will show up on archive.org in a few months, but there doesn't seem to be anything there now.

Agreed. Please add RSS support.  I just can't keep up on the forums without it.   :'(

I took at look at it. I don't think we need an agreement at all. First, because most people don't read it, it any agreement may not legally valid. Second there is no rights the members have to give up to join the forum, so there is no need for them to agree to give them up. The party has the right to remove objectionable postings and ban users even without a user agreement.

RSS feeds has to be enabled in the News and Newsletters Settings (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=96). There is more information on configuring them here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0).

Exactly... So our agreement could be as simple as

'Dont be a douchebag, dont troll, dont harass and be respectful and courteous to your fellow forum members' :)

Besides one of the things some of us would like to do is remove the excessive amount of legalese in EULA and other types of agreements.

We could just change the "agreement" to this:

Don't be a dick.
