PirateParty Manifesto/Goals/Aims

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Personally my goals are more along the lines of a consumer rights/advocacy group, the reason being that Canada has a first past the post electoral system, so getting elected is unlikely anytime soon. Pick the battles you can actually win in other words.

-DRM
-Privacy
-Patent law reform
-Copyright law reform

being the primary 4 areas. Educating consumers, citizens, rights holders, etc (I make a clear distinction between the groups), also finding creative ways to protest the current system, and so on. Maybe someday a true political party, but with the electoral system we have that’s not going to be anytime soon.

So the site is finally up and running. What is the Pirate Party of Canada? It is an organization aimed at copyright and patent law reform. Let’s get one thing clear right away: we do not condone breaking criminal laws, nor do we condone breaking civil laws. The name of this organization was inspired by the Swedish Pirate Party, and I suspect they took the name because it’s a lot easier to remember then something like “The [country name] party for copyright and patent reform” which is a bit of a mouthful, and does not lend itself well to an acronym (CPCPR?). Currently this site exists to help interested people find each other and getting things started.
