(If there's already a thread for this, I apologize)

I would like to discuss a license under which I have - and always will - released my music. The Creative Commons License is a way for artists to get their work published for free, and enable people to download their work. As long as the artist is credited, anyone is allowed to distribute or remix their work. In this day and age, one of the best ways to get any sort of publicity is online through downloads. Literally millions of potential listeners can listen to/ view your work online. Under CC, people can't make any profits off the artist's work. They are free to remix the media in question as long as it's released under a similar license.

Rather than reserving rights and forcing people to pay to listen to something they might not enjoy, artists should consider releasing some of their work under CC. If people like it, great! They might even buy their album. Making downloadable media illegal when rights are reserved would only close off many potential listeners/viewers. Many independant artists wouldn't be nearly as successful if not for this sort of publicity. Things become much more profitable when released for free.

Both Pirate Party works and music uploaded to CaPT are released under CC licenses. I'm actually pushing for the relicensing of PPCA works under CC0, their public domain variant. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't actually make money from the sale of a creative work, you have no reason to restrict its use. Copyright is a means, not an end.

Some people just like building a name for themselves which is why I would say most of the CC licenses require attribution are among the most popular. For alot of people its about the recognition for their hard work, rather han gettin $$$ for it.

All CC licenses require attribution, unless you count CC0. And yeah, if there's a personal benefit to "making a name for yourself", you're welcome to take advantage of that. We as a party don't have any reason to establish a creative reputation.
