GoDaddy is Pro-SOPA

December 23rd, 2011 at 2:42am | 3 Comments

As many of you may have heard, internationally renowned domain registrar GoDaddy has recently stated that it supports the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). GoDaddy was questioned and further confirmed their position in a press release (GoDaddy’s position on SOPA).

Due to this unfortunate position, the Pirate Party of Canada has since decided to remove its domains from Godaddy and to transfer them to a company that better coincides with our ideals - NameCheap.

Since GoDaddy’s publicly stated support for SOPA, NameCheap has published their own release reassuring their customers that they are completely against SOPA and are as disappointed in GoDaddy as we are (NameCheap says no to SOPA).

The Pirate Party of Canada takes the freedoms and rights of Canadians very seriously, and has taken a stand along with other Pirate Parties and like-minded organizations against SOPA. If you are in the United States, please contact your congressman or woman and let them know how you feel about SOPA.

The Pirate Party of Canada is a federal political party focused on thoughtful information policy reform, genuine democracy, civil liberties, and the freedom of the Internet. You can find out more online at www.pirateparty.ca.

SOPA Especially worries me when I look at the previous liberties the U.S. government has been seen to take in the face of the “unknown”. Such as sending troops into a country that was clearly NOT producing nuclear arms, or even more domestically and far more troubling, arresting young intelligent children for things which could hardly be considered a crime if not for some fancy wordplay and an impending sense of doom touted, spawned, and strengthened by ignorance, namely I bring to mind Operation Sundevil.

It’s since been announced by GoDaddy that they are no longer supporting SOPA. They do, however, have a clause in their TOS that says they can shut down sites they deem inappropriate without warning.

    So there’s that.

I like the way our Pirate Party of Canada handles GoDaddy stance.
